UTV stands for Utility Terrain Vehicles, which means "application off-road vehicle". These are small, four-wheel-drive multi-purpose vehicles that are usually smaller and more open than passenger cars, but more powerful and more capable off-road. Utility terrain vehicles are usually two-seaters with a loading area, comparable to a pick-up truck. However, they are also available as four-seaters with a correspondingly smaller load area and also with a much more aerodynamic shape as pure leisure off-roaders.
Utility Terrain Vehicles are ideal for driving on public roads - for this purpose, they must be a UTV with road approval due to insurance cover - as well as on rough terrain for agricultural or forestry purposes. Due to their excellent off-road characteristics, UTVs are also often used for military operations. This means that UTVs are used by private individuals, companies and even public authorities.
A UTV is not a quad! Many people confuse a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) with a quad bike (ATV). However, these are two completely different types of vehicle. The UTV has a steering wheel - the ATV only has a handlebar. In addition, a UTV can carry more weight and is less sensitive to cornering.
