The sandwich construction is used in various special vehicles for the box body. Sandwich elements have the advantage in vehicle construction that they are very light and at the same time very stable. They also have integrated thermal insulation. Sandwich box bodies are used for ambulances, among other things.
Sandwich panels for vehicle construction are composed and manufactured from various materials. Today, their core often consists of a layer of rigid foam surrounded by wooden panels and cover layers of aluminum or GRP (glass fiber reinforced plastic). These sandwich elements are used to assemble a case that can be placed on a typical delivery van model. The advantage of this separate construction is that the vehicle can be replaced separately from the van body (or vice versa). This makes the combination of the vehicle with driver's cab and the box body in sandwich construction a very attractive and, in the long term, more cost-effective lightweight solution. The lower weight of the sandwich elements also means that other vehicle components are subject to less stress and last longer.
The sandwich elements can usually be made to customer specifications in order to meet the individual requirements of the special vehicle. Different material combinations can be used for ceiling elements, side elements and floor elements, depending on the requirements for strength, torsional rigidity or insulation.
