Garbage truck

Refuse collection vehicles are special vehicles for waste disposal. They are technically referred to as waste collection vehicles and consist of a chassis with a driver's cab and a special body that can collect and compress the waste. The body of a refuse collection vehicle consists of a loading compartment, a compacting unit and a container bed.

In the past, garbage trucks were pulled by horses and waste collectors had to load the waste onto the truck manually. Modern garbage trucks have mechanical devices that effortlessly lift the garbage cans and empty the contents into the compactor. In some cases, there are even gripper arms on so-called "side loaders" that automatically pick up and empty the garbage cans. Specific gripping devices have to be designed for the different types of bins.

There is a built-in compactor inside the refuse collection vehicle. This compactor compresses the waste in order to take up large quantities of waste in the loading space. The load compartment of a refuse collection vehicle can hold around 10,000 kilograms of waste. The compressed waste is either driven to a recycling plant or an incineration plant, where it is disposed of accordingly.
