Mobile work platforms are used for assembly, repair or other work on high buildings, bridges, towers and so on, where a ladder is too short or too unsafe. The worker stands on a kind of platform mounted on a vehicle and can be moved up and down electronically controlled. Flexibility, speed and, above all, safety are the most important criteria for the reliable use of mobile work platforms.
Work platforms in special vehicle construction are usually mounted on a vehicle as so-called articulated arm platforms, scissor lifts or mast-guided climbing platforms to make them mobile. For the most part, the use of these mobile work platforms, also known as aerial work platforms, is much less spectacular than the operations in which aerial rescue vehicles - i.e. turntable ladders - are used by the fire department, which also belong in this category.
The different types of use
Articulated arm platforms are mobile work platforms that are used for work on street lighting, trees and overhead lines, for example. The actual work platforms are located on an articulated arm that can be flexibly aligned.
Scissor lifts are often used for assembly work in high halls, for example directly under the roof. Here, the work platform is located on a structure that moves apart or together like scissors, thereby gaining or losing height.
Mast-guided climbing platforms are used as mobile work platforms for long-term and large-scale applications such as façade installation. A horizontal work platform is mounted on a vertical mast, on which it slides up and down.
The different techniques
Mobile work platforms in special vehicle construction make use of a wide variety of technology, primarily to ensure the safety of the people working on them and at the same time to enable them to work effectively. Electric motors, hydraulics and rope mechanics are used as well as gear and worm drives.
Mobile work platforms can be mounted on truck frames, rail vehicles, tracked vehicles or trailers. They can be mounted at heights of just a few meters up to 100 meters and more.
