Digital radio for BOS & Bundeswehr

Digital radio for BOS (authorities and organizations with security tasks) is the voice and data radio system for all German BOS and the Bundeswehr in domestic operations. The development and construction of the necessary infrastructure has been underway since around the mid-2000s and digital radio is now the standard for BOS radio almost everywhere. In addition to unencrypted transmission, there are two levels of encryption - encryption of the radio transmission and end-to-end encryption of all data. The BOS radios can carry out the encryption and decryption themselves as transmitters and terminals. According to the Federal Agency for Digital Radio BOS, there are almost 4,800 base stations in total, which achieve more than 99 percent network coverage in Germany.

In addition to the BOS, i.e. police, fire department, disaster and civil protection authorities, fire department, rescue services and more, the German Armed Forces have also been using the digital radio network for several years. This offers advantages in emergencies and domestic operations, for example for coordination with the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and fire departments in the event of a disaster. Efficient group communication can be set up for this purpose. In addition, the shared use of the BOS radio by the Bundeswehr is cheaper than setting up a separate, independent network.
