An NBC explorer is a specialized vehicle that is used by the fire department, for example, to detect and report chemical, biological or radioactive contamination. The term "NBC" stands for nuclear, biological and chemical, which indicates the types of hazards that these vehicles can detect. However, there are not only NBC explorers in the fire department, but also NBC explorers in the federal government.
The main component of the NBC explorer is a measuring container that is specially equipped to be installed in various emergency vehicles as part of the NBC protection system. This enables flexible use and rapid response to different hazardous situations. The container contains various measuring systems:
- The chemical measuring system: This system is used to detect chemical contaminants in the environment.
- The radiological measuring system: This is used to measure radioactive radiation.
- Powerful PC with software: This is used to analyze and process the data from the measuring systems.
The container also contains a power supply unit that enables the devices to be operated autonomously and independently of external power sources. A charging unit ensures that the internal battery can be charged both via the vehicle network and the public power grid
The NBC explorer is also equipped with technical devices such as printers, storage media, GPS, radios and monitors that enable the collected data to be managed efficiently and communicated in real time.
The crew of the fire department's NBC explorer and the federal NBC explorer consists of eight people, with four people always operating and monitoring the measuring systems in shifts. This high number of people ensures that the systems can be operated and monitored around the clock.
In summary, the NBC explorer is a highly specialized and technically sophisticated vehicle in the service of NBC protection that is equipped for fast and efficient reconnaissance of specific hazards in order to respond to emergencies involving nuclear, biological or chemical threats.
