STANAG 4569 (actually NATO AEP-55 STANAG 4569) is a NATO standardization agreement. In this agreement, the member states have agreed on the "protection levels for occupants of logistics and light armored vehicles". Ballistic protection is divided into six levels, which determine the risk from projectiles, artillery and booby traps or the corresponding protection.
The protection classes of STANAG 4569 are divided into kinetic energy, artillery, fragmentation protection and mine blast. The higher the level, the greater the protection. Level 1, for example, protects against medium cartridges with small projectiles (7.62 x 51 mm) from 30 meters at 833 m/s, while level 6 protects against 30 mm projectiles or AP from 500 meters. Artillery protection also increases gradually: while level 1 protects against high explosives from a distance of 100 meters, level 6 protects you from a distance of just 10 meters.
Through standardization in the STANAG (Standardization Agreement), NATO aims to ensure the interoperability of the armed forces. The voluntary commitment of each nation enables common procedures, designs and terminology to be used despite the fact that armed forces operate across national borders. Although special vehicle construction in the military differs in practically every country, STANAG 4569, among others, creates a basis on which all member countries can agree.
