Special vehicles for rescue services

Special vehicles for rescue services can often be found on German roads. In addition to the German Armed Forces and their hospitals, the group of rescue services in Germany includes private and municipal rescue services, the fire department and a large number of charitable aid organizations such as Malteser, Johanniter and the German Red Cross.

They all rely on a fleet of highly specialized vehicles that can handle the complex tasks of modern rescue services. Rescue workers must be able to rely on the machines during operations. We are constantly working on meeting these high demands with our special vehicles.

Wide range of tasks for special vehicles of the rescue services

Special vehicle construction often requires individual solutions. As in other areas, special vehicles for emergency services perform their tasks on the basis of careful planning, tailor-made designs and precise mechanical engineering solutions. A large number of differently equipped special vehicles are used for fire departments and disaster control, such as command vehicles, various command vehicles and ambulances. These each fulfill a variety of tasks. The command vehicle is used, for example, for the rapid transportation of command personnel to the scene of an emergency and for the further coordination of smaller operations on site. Command vehicles are usually based on conventional cars that are specially equipped to meet the requirements of the operation. This equipment falls under the term special load. This includes breathing apparatus or radio equipment, for example.

Special vehicles, which are used in emergency rescue and serve to provide first aid and transport patients, are also equipped with special equipment. The basis for these models in special vehicle construction is usually a delivery van. The best-known model in Germany is probably the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, although other vehicles are also used depending on the region and rescue service. These are equipped with box or box bodies, which are built, equipped and connected to the chassis by a manufacturer of special vehicles. Special, reusable box bodies (so-called swap bodies) are also possible; these can be mounted on a new, suitable chassis after the first basic vehicle has left service.

Equipment details for these ambulances vary depending on the specific area of responsibility, but generally include at least the standard medical equipment, which can either be transported in a separate emergency case or removed from the box body for easier initial treatment of patients.

Special types of special vehicles for rescue services

In addition to the commonly used ambulance, other specialized vehicles can be built for rescue services. These include heavy-duty ambulances, for example, whose box bodies are equipped for transporting very overweight patients and which are usually based on a larger chassis, such as that of a truck.

Infectious disease ambulances are very similar to conventional ambulances, but have a box body that can be completely shielded from the outside world, with a radio intercom system for communication with the driver's cab. A cabin lined with stainless steel for better disinfection, protective suits and air filters are also among the possible equipment features of this special vehicle type. Other models similar to the ambulance are special vehicles with special equipment for premature babies and special intensive care transports, which are used for patients in critical condition.

Large-capacity ambulances are based on the chassis of a bus and are used to care for and transport several patients. They are mostly used nationwide and can be used in a variety of ways due to the available space variability.

In addition to these special variants, special vehicles can also be converted into unique special vehicles that are, for example, hybrids between various "conventional" special vehicles. These models include exotic vehicles such as a cross between a fire engine and a rescue vehicle, or vehicles that are used to provide first aid for special medical conditions. In Germany, confirmed or potential stroke patients have been able to be picked up and treated quickly and in a disease-oriented manner for over ten years.
