A rescue vehicle according to DIN 14555-3 is defined as a fire department vehicle that is equipped with fire fighting equipment. According to this standard, fire department rescue vehicles are not stand-alone emergency vehicles, but are generally used together with a water-carrying fire engine.

Possible applications for fire department rescue vehicles include

  • Technical assistance for major incidents
  • Support for hazardous goods operations
  • Truck accidents
  • Accidents on construction sites
  • Accidents in rail transport
  • serious industrial accidents
  • Building collapses
  • Oil inserts
  • Rescue from great heights or depths

The equipment of the fire department's rescue vehicle is also standardized according to DIN. A rescue vehicle with standardized equipment has, among other things:

Armored vehicles are normally manufactured on the basis of standard truck chassis and must have a standard crew cabin. It is required that a storage space of at least 50 liters is available for each person on board to accommodate personal equipment. The equipment compartment may be divided into several separate, individually accessible compartments. If there is a roof load, the roof must be designed so that it can be walked on when cargo is placed on it and there must be a means of access mounted on the outside of the vehicle.
