Multi-range antennas are used in official mobile radio, for example in special vehicles for the military, police and fire department. The underlying radio technology makes it possible to access different frequency bands with a single antenna - a multi-range antenna is therefore multi-band capable.
In addition to this, so-called duplex crossovers are often installed, which additionally support the simultaneous use of different frequency bands via a compatible multi-range antenna. These duplex crossovers have a duplex channel. A duplex channel is a frequency pair whose frequencies are offset by a certain distance. Accordingly, both frequencies can be received with the same antenna.
Multi-range antennas: Application
The 2-metre and 4-metre bands, for example, are used by authorities and organizations with security tasks (BOS) and the German Armed Forces via multi-range antennas. These are in the frequency ranges around 150 and 80 MHz respectively and are also divided into an upper and lower band. For example, the frequency range from 165 to 174 MHz is used for the BOS radio emergency services, while the range from 74 to 87 MHz is used for control center radio. The 4-meter band is also available to the German Armed Forces for domestic use. With a multi-range antenna, different channels can be used flexibly, which correspond to the frequency allocations of the respective authority.
