An essential element of an ITW is a high-performance ventilator that supports various ventilation modes such as invasive, non-invasive and CPAP. In addition, the ITW has an oxygen supply system with a sufficient supply for long transports. A defibrillator is also on board to treat cardiac arrhythmias and monitor cardiac activity, often integrated with an ECG function.
Equipment of an intensive care transport trolley for drug supply
Several infusion pumps are available for the continuous administration of medication and fluids. Comprehensive patient monitoring is carried out by a monitoring system that measures vital parameters such as ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and temperature. A portable suction pump is also part of the equipment on an intensive care transport trolley to keep the patient's airways clear. The emergency medication on board covers a broad spectrum, including anesthetics, sedatives, painkillers and antihypertensives. Modern means of communication enable connection with hospitals and control centers, while GPS and other navigation aids ensure a fast and safe journey to the destination. Special storage devices ensure that medical equipment and medication are stored safely and vibration-free during the journey.

Corresponding vehicles of our military, i.e. the Bundeswehr ambulances and rescue vehicles, are also equipped with military-specific adaptations, as the Bundeswehr maintains its own rescue service. These include additional protective measures such as ballistic protection in the form of armor and the integration of military communication and navigation systems. Bundeswehr ambulances are designed for extreme operating conditions, with more robust construction and off-road capabilities. They also contain specialized medical equipment for treating injuries caused by explosions or gunshot wounds and are adapted for use in crisis and conflict zones, for example with mobile decontamination systems and devices for rapid evacuation.
This comprehensive equipment of the intensive care ambulance ensures that the ITW offers the highest standards of care in both the civilian and military sectors and is prepared for various medical emergencies, both in civilian and Bundeswehr-organized rescue services. ITWs of both types therefore make a decisive contribution to the rescue and stabilization of patients who require intensive medical care while being transported safely and efficiently to their destination.
